They call it “the lovers’ bridge”. Legend has it that, as you pass beneath it by boat, a kiss and a wish are enough to seal your love. The Pont Marie has linked the Île Saint-Louis to the Right Bank for almost four centuries.
The story of the place
Completed in 1635, the Pont Marie owes its name to the developer Christophe Marie, who built it while he was laying out the Île Saint-Louis. Long lined with houses, it has kept its old-Paris look.
The lovers’ tradition has been passed down there for generations: glide beneath one of its arches while kissing and make a wish that, so they say, will come true. Padlove gives that wish a lasting mark, engraved with both your names.
